Economic Development
The Economic Development program area places an emphasis on raising the per capita income for Arkansas through research-based collaborations with business, government, nonprofit, and university leaders. These partnerships are formed to foster innovation and develop high-skill levels in the Arkansas workforce.
Governor Winthrop Rockefeller made great contributions in the area of economic development. He was named chair of the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission in 1955 and created the Arkansas Opportunity Fund the following year. Governor Rockefeller is credited with bringing over 600 new businesses and 90,000 new jobs to Arkansas.
